Share 'Hanging Sculpture 4, resting as a stabile'

To create a three-dimensional abstract non-objective linear form, I reach inside for direction. There are no external guideposts in the sense of familiar objects to replicate. The materials are transformed through my own impulses as I work. My internal states of thought - feeling - intuition become externalized. Though I make sketches to sort through ideas, decisions come up that are not helped by my two-dimensional drawings. As I work, what's necessary is a clear sense of aesthetic direction and being able to stay focused in the moment. If I loose clarity and momentum, I fail, for once the materials are stressed, it can't be undone. The armatures for all of my small sculptural forms are created from one continuous wire, in this case a fourteen foot length. No. 4 is done in 14K gold-filled and blue niobium wires with semi-precious stones for color and shape detail. As a sculptor I've worked with welded steel, cast bronze, clay, wood, stone, fibers, plastics, fluorescent lights etc. For me right now, thinking in the materials I'm currently using for jewelry design naturally translates into ideas for my sculptural forms. No. 4 measures 15" L x 9" H x 6" W, and moves in constant (slow) motion with air currents. Here it is living as a Stabile, resting flat.
