I would love to win this prize as I have never had any formal millinery training. I have entered my peacock feather hat for this competition . I am a jeweller originally with an underlying passion for costume with a major need to recycle or use all to had to make something beautiful from, to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. The feathers were found when I was a child at The House…See More

About
I am Scottish, based in England but have lived in Australia, Canada and America. I work with recycled materials and have done so since my last year of my degree at Edinburgh College of Art in the late 80's/early 90's.

My work has centred around wire reclaimed from televisions, randomly knotted and re-created into hats and corsets as well as jewellery. Most recently, I have been playing around with plastic for a cheaper range as well as working on a bigger scale in sculptural commissions in reclaimed wire from the building industry.

I also work as art liaison officer for 2Bio Ltd in Liverpool, hosting exhibitions for local artists, combining art and science.

I have just resigned as the main organiser for the annual Oxton Art Fair at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead, Merseyside after a number of years but still hope to exhibit with the group in the future.

I did an interview in early summer in Home Cafe in Oxton Village with the very beautiful Miss Elizabeth Short. At the same time, was involved with loaning my corsets, jewellery and hats for photo shoot with make-up artist Persis Peters and photographer, Matt Kelly, thankfully as often happens all things came together…

Hi Alison

Its great to have you join up.

We are discussing sustainability and jewellery this month - I have started a discussion on recycling and found materials, although it hasnt really got too far, yet. It would be great to have your input. Also dont forget to join our Sustainabiltiy and Jewellery group - we would love to hear how these problems are being resolved outside of Australia.

There is lots of stuff you can do on kit and caboodle - put images, news and events up, ask/answer stuff in the forums, join a group and yes, you can even pimp your page. We need your input to let us know what is happening in your part of the world so dont forget to add blog posts.

Just remember kit and caboodle is a public network, its aim is promotional, so be sure to only put up personal details that you are comfortable with. There are privacy and email options in the settings. (Gazillions of kit and caboodle emails in your inbox driving you bonkers? Check out how to fix that in FAQ on the right.)

Kit and caboodle is an ideal place to put up posts about exhibitions or any current news that you have. There is a lot of interest in the network. It would be great if you posted regularly in the blog, you can choose to have blog posts on your page and/or on the front page. Add some images and links too.

Also join our facebook page. Say hi to Sonya.

Most of all, there are lots of opportunities to network with other jewellers, outlets, galleries and to see what is happening in the world of contemporary jewellery. It should be fun. Anytime you have a problem, or cant work something out, let me know.

Cheers
Cathy
