Broach of the Month Club was created in an effort to reinstate the community aspect of traditional craft into the contemporary jewellery culture. The project is focused on the emotional and physical experience of wearing.
Twelve emerging jewellers submitted a brooch reflecting their unique attitude or mode of approaching jewellery. Twelve wearers were recruited to wear, reflect and swap brooches in a book club format. The wearers are asked to wear the brooches out in public at least once during each month.
The Broach of the Month Club is a social group. It officially kicked off in August 2008 with an opening night party where wearers meet jewellers and photos were taken. While monthly updates to the blog are encouraged, each wearer was given a journal to write more private thoughts about the brooches and the project. Each month, the wearers meet and brooches are passed to the next participant. There are quarterly gatherings organised for the makers to interact with the wearers. The club will conclude with a closing night party where photos will again be taken and stories exchanged.
