Material Migrations - Jewellery in the Urban Milieu at Chinese Museum

April 18, 2011 at 6pm to May 23, 2011 at 5pm
Melbourne, AustraliaThis project explores the relation between jewellery and the urban milieu.  It engages the given site of Chinatown through both the making and wearing of jewellery.  A series of brooches made from materials selected from this locale have been given away to people who are asked to observe how it affects their experience of the city.  In exchange, they are asked to photograph the connections and encounters that arise.  These are added to a video work that accumulates over…See More

About
I'm currently in Melbourne, doing a PhD by project at RMIT.

The project is provisionally entitled "Jewellery in the Urban Milieu - Explorations in emergence".

The project approaches jewellery practice as a way of feeding off and feeding back into the urban environment. This is informed by the analogy of a saprophyte: an organism that decomposes and processes materials, and feeds them back into its ecosystem.
This approach to practice offers a mode of research where artefacts, concepts and relations emerge through experimentation. Processes of making and wearing jewellery are used to question, test and examine how jewellery can engage the ecology of the city.
The Phd examines this mode of practice and what it can offer jewellery practice and its relation with the urban context.

I spent the first half of the year in Palestine making work from materials I could find and the few handtools I took with me. It was a valuable opportunity to experience the way constraints and pressures of a different (and adverse) environment cause practice to emerge differently.

I am back in Melbourne producing new work and planning 'wearing experiments' that resituate the work back into this urban environment.
