Welcome, Phill Mason!

Father and son, Phill and Tyrus creating in the studio...

Ty and I work in front of a plate-glass window, so the public can watch our every move. This is typically what they see: our minds churning with creativity; inspiration dropping from the heavens; magic generating from our fingertips; wads of money and priceless jewels lying scattered about. All patently obvious ;)

Here is one of my Bangle-Bottles from which I've generated a gif, so that the viewer can see it unstoppered...

This is not dissimilar to one of my bangle-bottles which was included in the Lark Books '500 Metal Vessels' a couple of years ago. I've played with developing this idea along a few avenues now. As a wearable perfume bottle, it transformed scent into a virtual gem, allowing another way for it to be 'worn'.

Here's a cartoonized version of the first photo I uploaded as my avatar...

haha no worries and thank you. I am thoroughly enjoying the run up to University and work doesn't get more interesting than the natural universe and everything in it :) I hope all is well for you and Tyrus.

Hi Phil, thanks so much for your nice comments! I'll put up a couple of other photos so you can see the other ring in the set better.
I notice on your website you've done some mokume, with much trepidation, i'm about to fire my first billet containing silver this week, cross fingers for me!
Best

...it must be hard for you and tyrus to concentrate at your bench with all those sparkling graphics flying around your heads.

About
My Studio is in Hobart, where I've worked on Salamanca Place for 25 years. My son, Tyrus, was trained by me, and has worked with me for 15 years.
I am ex-officio: National President of JMGA; Convenor of the JMGA Conference in Hobart; National Vice-President Crafts Council Australia; President Crafts Council of Tasmania; President of the Salamanca Arts Centre Inc.
A founding member of the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia, I am currently its Tasmanian rep.
I taught Jewellery in Hobart TAFE in the 1980's early 90's, and currently teach part of the Gemmology course in Hobart for the GAA.
Being a gemcutter, designer and goldsmith, I am fortunate to be in control of the vision of the jewel all the way from the miner to the wearer.
To this end, I go o'seas twice a year, sourcing gemstone rough for my cutting. Handling gemstones from the rough to the finished cut stone is indulgently luxurious. Frequently I design my own cuts with GemCAD, to maximise scintillation or some other new effect, then I hand-cut using an Imahashi faceting lap. For two years running I have been the recipient of Second-place for faceting in the 'Gemmys', held annually in the States. Similarly, I'm partial to opal cutting, and have won four awards over the years, including overall Winner of Manufactured Jewellery Design, in the Interanational Opal Jewellery Design Awards, held every two years at Lightning Ridge.
Jewellery design is a passion, and has made me the fortunate recipient of over thirty awards, ranging from the inaugural Winner of 'Contemporary Wearables', in 1989, and the Mobil (Australia) Award for Excellence in Craft, 1987, through to being Runner-up in the Bench Jewelers 'Passion Award', held in the States, this year (2009).
Silversmithing is also a medium I enjoy exploring, and this year I was a Finalist in the Saul Bell Award (held in the USA)for Hollowware, with one of my 'bangle-bottles'; a scent bottle worn as a bangle. One of these was included in Lark Books '500 Metal Vessels' last year.
Much as I obviously love hand-fabrication first and foremost, nevertheless for the past year I have been developing new work with CADCAM, allowing my imagination to manifest objects which my mind can conjure, but hands and tools can't make.
The trick is not to be seduced by cyber, and to put the computer aided design into context with all the other techniques and skills, gradually integrating all these into the production of obets d'art which incorporate silversmithing and goldsmithing, gemcutting and stone setting, hollow-fabrication and CADCAM, all sublimated to my own signature style which has evolved over the years.
My other passions include collecting agate and cutting it into cabinet specimens, to which end I've travelled to many sites around the world; and 1980's water-cooled Porsches - I'm currently restoring my fourth one, a 1981 Turbo 931.
You may drive fast and brake late, but a day spent away from the bench is still not fully satisfying...
Outlets
Besides my own studio outlet: Masons Studio Jewellers, at 33 Salamanca Place, Hobart, I also stock hand-fabricated, gemstone-set goldsmithing at 'e.g. etal' in Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
