It was an unexpected surprise to be short-listed for the ‘Hats off 3D printing challenge’ run by i.materialise, and an even bigger surprise to win!
The challenge stipulated that the finished design had to fit into a 20cm cube so not wanting to feel restricted I put my thinking hat on to see if I could come up with something that would create a bigger impact on the runway.
After many versions I ended up designing a giant Daisy with articulating petals. The hat was 3D printed with the petals in the upright position so that it would fit within the 20cm cube, but once printed each of the petals would open to form a hat with a 60cm diameter. Luckily this worked, (first time apparently!) and also gave a really nice movement to the hat when worn. The petals bounce as the model moves, bringing the hat to life.
Here are more images of all the wonderful hats, a video of the Fashion Show and the interview with me that happened right after the event which you can see here.
