Welcome to ManJewellery, a one-day-only jewellery event in Melbourne, Australia.
Traditional etiquette recommends the 'less is more' approach for men in the jewellery department - a watch, cufflinks, a wedding ring, maybe a neck chain.
But now that the 21st century is well into its tweens, the time has come to embrace and explore the possibilities of a bold new era of contemporary men's jewellery. And Part B, as ever, is keen to play its part!
How do we propose to do this? Our aim is to encourage grander statements of manjewellery in real-life, so it seems only logical to present examples of this in a real-life situation. The result of our mad dreaming will be a one-night-only happening at a CBD pub, where each piece of Part B manjewellery will be displayed on its very own living, breathing man-stand!
Manjewellery is the second in Part B's series of one-night-only jewellery happenings.
About Part B happenings…
Part B happenings are a series of one-day/night-only exhibitions exploring and deconstructing the traditional gallery customs of jewellery display and the way this presentation influences people's engagement and interaction with jewellery. Each exhibition is held in a different, unexpected location around greater Melbourne, and the works are presented without gallery infrastructure, – the traditional white plinths, white gloves, sterile glass cases and twinkling lights approach – instead we use only what is already there. The jewellery is made specifically in response to each particular site and/or theme. Casual passers-by are encouraged to join the invited guests, who themselves will have only received minimal notice of the event. For Part B as a group, the happenings are a way to establish our public identity, giving us a (short yet incandescent) presence in the Melbourne art and jewellery communities. It also begins our dialogue with audiences through participation, inviting critical review of the events, the group and the work.
